Job Description: The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience Program at Colgate University is seeking applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician for it's Neurogenetics of Vocal Learning Laboratory. This lab focuses on the vocal learning behavior and its underlying neuroanatomical and molecular mechanisms by using songbirds as animal models. Research conducted in the lab is generally focused on two major themes: 1) How early social experience or prenatal/ postnatal environment may affect the development of vocal learning and its neural circuits, and 2) The molecular genetics and neural mechanisms that underlie the developmental disorders of vocal or speech learning.
This is a wonderful position for a recent college graduate who would like to gain further experience in an intensive research setting before applying to graduate school. This is a 2 year, 12 month grant-funded position beginning in June or July, 2017. A two-year commitment is highly preferred. Essential Functions: Responsibilities include assisting the PI to perform molecular, neuroanatomical, and behavioral research using songbirds. Specific duties include (but are not limited to): assisting the PI to produce and maintain a few lines of transgenic songbirds, genotyping and phenotyp, behavioral manipulation and recordings, chemical preparation, assisting with the training of undergraduate RAs, data processing, data analysis, and general lab organization and maintenance.
(Education and Experience):
- This position requires a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree.
- Solid communication skills are needed in order to successfully work with the PI and numerous undergraduate research assistants.
- A demonstrated, technologically savvy, highly organized approach and the ability to work independently are also essential.
- Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students within a university context.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- A major in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biology, or related field is preferred.
- Some research experience with computer programming skill (e.g., MATLAB) is preferred.
- The successful candidate will ideally possess some experience/familiarity with PCR, immunohistochemistry, western blotting, or small animal neurosurgery.
