Are you looking for a job where you can truly make a difference? Interested in a position that allows you to freely do medicine, surgery, and help the community without having to talk money or be limited by a client’s budget? The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department may be the place for you! We are the ones who are there for the animals that have nowhere else to go.
Why Albuquerque? Located in the heart of the Southwest, Albuquerque, New Mexico boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, or exploring the stunning Sandia Mountains and desert trails.
The city’s Albuquerque International Sunport and Amtrak station provide convenient travel options for quick getaways. Albuquerque’s rich culture, award-winning cuisine, and breathtaking sunsets make it an exceptional place to live, work, and explore.
The Animal Welfare Department is a progressive, open-admission municipal shelter with an annual intake of about 18,000 animals. We are the largest animal shelter system in the state with two full-size shelters and an active offsite adoption program. We also provide preventive care (HQHVSN and vaccinations) to the public via our Preventive Pet Care Clinic and mobile vaccination van. We are looking to add two veterinarians to our current team of five. Our staff includes several Registered Veterinary Technicians and a large team of veterinary assistants that are committed to the medical and behavioral care of this population of homeless animals. Our main veterinary facility includes lots of room to treat a wide variety of sick and injured pets. We have standard equipment such as digital x-ray, in-house blood machines, orthopedic equipment and electrocautery.
The Staff Veterinarians share the duties of high-quality, high volume spay/neuter surgery, as well as many other types of surgery (soft tissue, orthopedic, dentistry); inpatient and outpatient treatment and monitoring; participation in disease management protocols; and community outreach programs. Full-time veterinarians generally work four 10-hour days per week but the schedule can be flexible. Enjoy the freedom of NO on-call or emergency duty. Experience in shelter medicine and/or HQHVSN a plus, but if you are new to this environment, we can work with the right candidate to help you improve your surgical and medical skills in a hands-on, immersive environment.
This is a position with the City of Albuquerque, which offers excellent pay and one of the best benefits packages you will find anywhere: paid vacation days, sick days, paid holidays, continuing education allowance, as well as significant employer contribution to retirement, PERA, health, vision and dental plans. Got student loan debt? As a municipal shelter, the time you spend with us qualifies you for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
