DVM Veterinary Student Externship Program at VCA Animal Hospitals

VCA’s Externship Program offers veterinary students the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience by applying classroom knowledge in a clinical setting. We welcome students from all years who are enrolled in AVMA-accredited universities to apply—whether as part of formal externship blocks or simply to gain hands-on experience.

Our program includes access to hundreds of locations across the U.S., staffed by exemplary veterinary professionals. Compensation is provided at our General Practice hospitals and select specialty/hybrid locations (except where prohibited by university regulations). Students interested in Emergency and Critical Care may also apply for specialized ER externships, gaining hands-on experience with a variety of emergency cases.

By participating in our Externship Program, you’ll have the opportunity to network directly with our doctors, hospital leadership, and regional teams—building meaningful connections that can help launch your career. You’ll also gain exposure to innovative digital tools like WoofWare, designed to streamline workflows and enhance patient care.

Externs receive a firsthand look at the many benefits and career opportunities available to those who choose to work with VCA after graduation.

Our hospitals offer a wide range of services, so the externship experience may vary by location. Once your application is submitted, your request will be confirmed, and a dedicated hospital team will help you set customized goals and guide you through a valuable, hands-on experience.
