- Head Shelter Veterinarian (Wellness Lead, HVSN Not Required)
Description
The Humane Society of Catawba County (HSCC) is seeking a Head Shelter Veterinarian to oversee the medical care of our shelter animals and support our growing community veterinary programs.
This position plays a key role in both shelter medicine and general wellness, overseeing the health of all HSCC residents while contributing to our mission of providing affordable, accessible care to the pets and families of our community.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive medical oversight for all shelter animals, including physical exams, treatment plans, and surgical recommendations.
- Perform spay/neuter surgeries and other procedures (dentals, amputations, mass removals, etc.) for HSCC residents as needed. HQHVSN is not required, but would be a tremendous asset to our growing community programs.
- Serve as the veterinarian of record for our two HSCC-operated clinics, enabling drug ordering and compliance under your active North Carolina license.
- Collaborate with our clinic and shelter teams to ensure humane, effective, and ethical care.
- Oversee clinic protocols, disease prevention, vaccination protocols, and quarantine/medical isolation policies.
- Support intake and outcome evaluations as needed to ensure quality of care and adoption readiness.
- Lead the wellness side of our community clinic by offering preventive and annual care to public clients.
- Provide medical guidance, mentorship, and training to staff and volunteers.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree from an accredited university.
- At least two years of veterinary experience.
- Active North Carolina veterinary license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
- Current DEA license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
- Surgical proficiency, including spay/neuter, pediatric procedures, dentals, amputations, mass removals, etc.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Commitment to accessible, compassionate animal care.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior shelter medicine, high-volume spay/neuter experience.
- High-Quality, High-Volume Spay/Neuter (HQHVSN) experience is not required but highly desirable.
- Familiarity with controlled substance management and DEA recordkeeping in a multi-site setting.
- Experience developing or refining medical protocols.
- Comfort with or interest in performing high-volume spay/neuter surgeries.
- Enthusiasm for community outreach.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Competitive salary of $100,000-$125,000, commensurate with experience.
