Veterinarian-30 Hours
Department: Animal Shelter FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: BCAS Director
SUMMARY: The Staff Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care for animals in the custody of Bastrop County, including those housed at the animal shelter and in foster care. This position focuses heavily on high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries, operating two to three days each week and averaging 25 to 30 surgeries per day. The veterinarian also provides routine medical evaluations, diagnostics, treatment for illness or injury, and preventive care to ensure the overall health and well-being of all shelter and foster animals. The veterinarian renders aid during emergency situations and supports the development of preventive health and treatment protocols in collaboration with shelter staff and leadership.
The Staff Veterinarian retains independent medical decision-making authority in accordance with the Texas Veterinary Licensing Act and Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (TBVME) rules. While the position collaborates closely with shelter staff and leadership, all medical judgments, treatment decisions, and standards of care remain the responsibility of the licensed veterinarian.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under the general direction of the Animal Services Director. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but collaborates closely with staff to provide veterinary expertise and support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Perform high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries for shelter and foster animals, averaging 25–30 surgeries per day;
2. Provide medical evaluations, diagnostics, and treatment plans for shelter and foster animals.;
3. Administer vaccinations, parasite prevention, and other routine care;
4. Render aid during emergency situations involving shelter or foster animals;
5. Maintain accurate medical records in accordance with shelter policies and state regulations;
6. Assist with the development and implementation of preventive and treatment protocols;
7. Communicate effectively with shelter staff to ensure appropriate follow-up and continuity of care;
8. Collaborate with the Animal Care Manager and Animal Services Director to monitor population health and ensure timely medical intervention;
9. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards of veterinary practice.

Knowledge of:
Various animal species, breeds, ages, and sizes. Practices and techniques used to maintain & monitor animal wellness and health in an animal shelter setting. Practices and techniques for high volume spay/neuter surgeries and Veterinary medicine.
Ability to:
Handle animals safely and effectively;
Identify signs of animal illnesses, diseases, and injuries;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the job;
Perform various manual tasks including some animal restraint and physical exams for extended periods of time;
Work independently in the absence of supervision;
Work in a safety-conscious environment and to follow & promote good safety practices; Learn, understand, and apply pertinent laws, rules, and regulations;
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Maintain physical condition needed to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include:
Walking, sitting, stooping or standing for long periods of time, Lifting and carrying animals, Climbing, Crawling, Squatting, Kneeling, Walking on uneven and/or slippery surfaces.
Maintain mental capacity sufficient to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and Responsibilities, which may include:
Effective interaction and communication with others;
Making sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, and LICENSING:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Some knowledge and experience in handling, identifying, and caring for animals.; or any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential job functions with preference for experience in the veterinary field.
Education: Veterinary Medicine Degree Required.
Licensing:
Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.
Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas and be eligible to be
DEA licensed. Must keep all licenses and CE up to date.
SELECTION GUIDELINES:

Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, a Veterinary Medicine Degree is Required, and a valid Texas Driver’s license (or a valid out of state Driver’s license with the ability to obtain a TXDL within 90 days). Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas and be eligible to be DEA licensed. Must keep all licenses and CE up to date.
