- Small Animal Veterinarian Surgical Focus

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinarian with a surgical focus to perform routine spay/neuter surgeries, conduct medical evaluations, and oversee clinical workflows within our facility. This role also includes providing medical oversight and guidance to kennel staff to ensure best practices in sanitation, infectious disease prevention, animal handling, and post-operative care.
This position requires serving as the Supervising Veterinarian of Record and maintaining the active veterinary license for the facility in compliance with North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board regulations.
The ideal candidate is a confident, efficient surgeon with strong leadership skills and the ability to shape clinic processes as we prepare for future growth. This is a full-time, salaried role offering a stable Monday–Friday schedule, with the expectation that the veterinarian will be available to come in for occasional emergencies when needed. The candidate will also play a key role in influencing clinic design, medical standards, and overall quality of care.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Responsibilities
- Perform routine canine spay and neuter surgeries with safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Maintain safe anesthesia protocols, pain management procedures, and sterile techniques.
- Oversee surgical flow to ensure timely, organized operations.
Medical & Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct medical intake examinations and routine health evaluations.
- Develop and oversee treatment plans for dogs requiring medical care.
- Implement preventive care protocols (vaccinations, deworming, parasite control, heartworm testing/treatment, etc.).
- Review and maintain accurate, compliant veterinary medical records.
Clinic Leadership & Operations
- Serve as the Supervising Veterinarian of Record for the facility.
- Carry and maintain the facility’s veterinary license in accordance with NCVMB regulations.
- Ensure the clinic is organized, sanitary, efficient, and compliant with state laws.
- Oversee medication inventory, ordering, controlled substance logs, and equipment maintenance.
- Mentor, train, and guide the veterinary technician and assistant.
- Assist with workflow optimization as the clinic evolves and expands.
Kennel Oversight & Protocol Development
- Provide medical oversight and direction to kennel staff, including:
- Cleaning vs. sanitizing standards
- Biosecurity and infectious disease control
- Post-surgical monitoring
- Proper animal handling and safety procedures
- Assist in developing, documenting, and training on new protocols.
- Help strengthen consistency and structure in daily animal care operations.
Future Program Development
- Support planning and implementation of future outpatient spay/neuter services.
- Help design workflows, standards, and clinic processes for expanded services.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with intake teams, trainers, kennel staff, and leadership.
- Provide clear, professional communication across departments.
- Ensure all animal care decisions align with program goals and best medical practices.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited institution.
- Must hold an active North Carolina veterinary license (required).
- Must be willing and able to serve as the Supervising Veterinarian of Record and carry/maintain the facility’s license.
- Must be a small-animal veterinarian with 3–5 years of canine spay/neuter surgical experience.
- Proven competency in safe, efficient surgical techniques.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and mentorship abilities.
- Experience developing or improving veterinary or kennel protocols.
- Ability to work independently and make sound medical decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in spay/neuter surgery, shelter medicine, or similar clinical settings.
- Prior experience working in canine programs, kennels, or working-dog environments.
- Background in infectious disease prevention, sanitation, and animal population management.
- Experience helping clinics develop or expand services.
