Kansas State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean. The university seeks a dynamic individual with a record of visionary leadership who can advance the College and its excellence in research/scholarship, learning, and public service through a bold vision of the role of veterinary medicine in discovery, research translation, and global health. The Dean will implement a collaborative vision for the College that integrates its multiple missions of education, research, clinical practice, diagnostic service, and public engagement in serving all the stakeholders of the state of Kansas and beyond. The Dean will work with an interdisciplinary approach with relevant colleges and departments at the University to establish Kansas State University as a global leader in animal health and safety. The Dean will work to enhance and strengthen the college to distinguish itself in relevant veterinary education, biomedical research, and public engagement at the state, national, and international levels. The position reports to Provost and Executive Vice President and is a senior administrative position that serves on the university’s Deans Council.
As chief academic and executive officer of the college, the Dean has primary responsibility for faculty and staff development, personnel oversight, budgetary planning and management, fundraising, academic and curricular issues, clinical resources, and facilities development. In that capacity, the Dean provides vision and leadership for the advancement of the college and fosters a collaborative culture supportive of the college’s missions of education, research, clinical practice, and public engagement. The Dean also has oversight of the Veterinary Health Center and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which includes responsibility for teaching within the hospital and diagnostic labs, patient care, diagnostic service, and research.
Specific responsibilities and expectations are listed below.
-Works effectively with faculty, staff, directors, department heads, deans, university administrators, students, and the broader community on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects. -Oversee implementation of the College's strategic plan and its alignment with K-State 2025 goals. -Support and expand professional and graduate programs to better position graduates for high impact biomedical care opportunities and enhance the College as a destination of choice for outstanding students. -Provide leadership with a high degree of personal involvement in the fundraising efforts on behalf of the College. -Serve as a strong advocate and facilitator for faculty to expand their research portfolio, as well as promote and strengthen basic, translational, and clinical research collaborative endeavors within the university and in the region, nation, and globally. -Be responsible for the attraction, development, and retention of high quality faculty and staff, that prides itself on strong engagement along with diversity and inclusion. -Maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with the community, alumni, benefactors, practitioners, and industry partners in the public and private sector on behalf of the College and University. -Provide budget and fiscal direction.
The successful candidate must also:
-Possess outstanding administrative experience as well as scholarly credentials and demonstrated commitment to advancing research, graduate and professional education, clinical service, public engagement and equal opportunity. -Show evidence of dynamic leadership experience, strategic vision with the ability to execute, strong financial management and decision-making skills, a commitment to teaching, research and engagement/outreach, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. -Have a proven record as successful administrator with responsibility for guiding strategy, managing budgets, evaluating personnel, motivating faculty, promoting accountability, engaging external constituencies, and fostering diversity and teamwork to create collaborative relationships across culturally diverse groups. -Be a dynamic individual whose intellect and disposition are suited to a wide range of academic and professional missions within the College and who is committed to an open and participatory administrative style.
Qualified applicants must have an earned degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
-Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated success in acquiring and aligning resources to achieve strategic goals; alumni relations, fund development, and external fundraising; experience implementing successful interdisciplinary programs that enhance the standing of an institution; and a record of promoting diversity, inclusion, and a global perspective among students, faculty, staff, and in the curriculum. -Earned Ph.D. or Board Certification in addition to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree. -Distinguished record of achievement in the areas of research, teaching, service, or industry with evidence of professional distinction and national or international recognition in the field that merits appointment at the rank of tenured, full professor at Kansas State University.
