For potential candidates we ask that you come in for a working interview with our Wednesday doctor to see if this job is a fit for you and our clinic. Our doctor is Humane Alliance trained and is willing to help with training a doctor/s to upgrade skills and techniques and is an ideal opportunity for a doctor/s to learn more about how our clinic and support team works!
The Animal Shelter Inc of Sterling, MA has immediate openings for 2 to 4 days a week for permanent PT and/or FT doctors (we are also looking for relief doctor/s to add to our list for coverage when needed) to join our growing team.
We are a non-profit, no kill animal shelter with an on-site high volume, high quality, s/n clinic and also promotes and supports pediatric spay/neuter (we are conveniently located in Central NE - less than an hour from CT - NH - RI - Boston) - we have an EXCITING opportunity for 1 or more doctor/s to join our growing team.
Currently our clinic is open (4) ten hour days a week - Monday-Thursdays 8 am-6 pm (due to a high demand and great need for affordable s/n in our area, limited resources for pets/owners, we are adding Fridays to our schedule).
The clinic schedule would be M-T-Th-F from 8am - 4pm or 9am - 5pm (again we are very flexible).
We have a doctor working Wednesdays now, sowe are looking for 1-2 doctor/s to cover M-T-Th and Fridays.

OUR CLINIC MISSION To promote and provide affordable, high quality low cost spay and neuter services for cats and dogs in an effort to stop the killing of animals due to overpopulation. To help our community’s animals and because our region has few programs for these services – the Sterling Shelter’s on-site veterinary clinic is proud to offer affordable spay / neuter services to the public. Our clinic specializes in pediatric spay/neuter - Pets that are 12+weeks and 2+ pounds can safely be fixed and the many benefits associated with early spay/neuter.

Position Requirements: Education: Graduation from a university or college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor degree. Licenses and Certification:
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Excellent surgical skills - safely and with speed – (we average 20-40 s/n daily) w/ ability and skill/knowledge to perform pediatric s/n (for doctors with surgical experience looking for tips/tricks on HQHVSN we have a Wednesday doctor willing to work with you on increasing speed/safety based on the Humane Alliance program
Surgical procedures for spaying and neutering canines and felines (bonus for other common shelter animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, etc) - if you do not currently have experience with rabbit s/n we would be happy to have you work with our Wednesday doctor to learn more about this procedure.
Provide medical care to shelter animals that have been surrendered to the shelter or have come to our shelter through one of our many transport programs, spay/neuter of primarily dogs/cats/puppies/kittens
assisting with oversight of medical/emergency cases if needed
Updating necessary medical records, performing exams, signing health certificates, medications as necessary
Providing high quality affordable s/n to other non-profits, shelters/rescues/ACOs and public as clinic time allows. Providing s/n for voucher program candidates pets and pet owners who cannot afford to have their pet s/n.
Ability to perform minor surgeries and procedures such as eye entropian, cherry eye, dentals, dewclaw removal, heartworm treatment and other minor surgeries such as mass removals etc..
An out-going personality who treats our clinic technicians / support team and shelter staff with respect and kindness. They will go out of their way to help our doctor/s with anything and we believe they should be treated with respect and kindness.
Works closely with Director and head tech to determine treatment plans and protocols that are aligned with the shelter and clinics mission while being conscious of financial constraints
Provides basic patient care for shelter pets, other shelters/rescues/ACO’s and public animals such as spay/neuter, vaccine clinics and other programs or events throughout the year.
Performs surgeries, including dentals, on all species. Prescribes treatment for sick or injured animals waiting for adoption
Reviews medical conditions of animals and provides treatment/s for adoptable pets as needed and Provides follow-up care or treatment to pets being fostered or sick animals as necessary.
Works alongside shelter and clinic team in maintaining herd health.
May require euthanasia based upon an animal’s physical or behavioral condition - euthanasia if needed for terminally ill/un-treatable medical conditions or aggressive animals (we are fortunate that we have less than 1% euthanasia rate for the past 5 years)
Oversees controlled substances in accordance with regulation.
As needed - discuss pet/s medical issue via telephone to shelter and/or clinic staff
As needed- recheck shelters foster animals, and those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness and provides medical action as required
Accurately maintains records and daily paperwork, including computer records and other routine documents.
Attends shelter/clinic events, as required, such as staff meetings, vaccination clinics, special programs for clinic etc.
As needed communicates with and assists other animal welfare partners of the shelter
Complies with the Animal Shelter’s Employee Handbook.
As needed - shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve the shelter/clinic’s ability to save money, generate revenue.
Knowledge and understanding how to effectively treat in-house the most common diseases and injuries we deal with (from URI – mange – parvo – ringworm – dental disease -heartworm)
Confident working as the only doctor and working with minimal supervision - Must be self-motivated.
Requires positive / can do attitude if working under pressure with patience, (we like to think of it as “controlled chaos”) with a strong support staff to provide assistance and support. Understanding sometimes the doctor may have to stop and re-direct focus of the day w/ understanding.
Requires tolerance, tact, and demonstrable compassion when working with staff and pet owners expressing a wide range of strong emotions, including anger, grief, frustration, and joy.
Must be flexible regarding the work environment to meet both shelter and clinic goals and programs.
As needed requires communication with shelter/clinic staff and if needed to speak clearly to clients and co-workers; and to answer medical questions for staff.
Rabbit s/n a bonus – learning to do these surgeries w/ our Wednesday doctor is encouraged for rabbits surrendered to shelter or rabbit owners looking to have their rabbits s/n through clinic.
Familiar with ClinicHQ software – we just purchased this for the clinic and are in the process of learning to set it up so it can be a new time-saving tool for the clinic and doctors.
Additional Salary Information: $5,000 SIGN ON BONUS FOR P/T DOCTOR TO WORK (2) DAYS a week EITHER M-T-TH-F
$10,000 SIGN ON BONUS FOR F/T DOCTOR TO WORK (4)DAYS M-T-TH-F
