The Society: Founded in 1899, The Anti-Cruelty Society is Chicago’s oldest and largest, private, open-admission, unlimited stay humane society. With a mission of building a community of caring by helping pets and educating people, its comprehensive programs and services help over 50,000 animals and humans every year and include: adoption, charity veterinary clinic, low or no-cost spay/neuter clinic, cruelty investigations and rescue, humane education & community outreach, a free behavior helpline, dog training classes, S.A.F.E. program (short-term accommodations for emergencies), The Bruckner Rehabilitation & Treatment Center, the Virginia Butts Berger Cat Clinic, and the Dog Rehabilitation Center.
Objectives: The Anti-Cruelty Society’s next president will aim to grow the organization to a multiple of the current size and to re-energize the organization and re-connect with The Society’s constituents, all to benefit animal welfare. This will require fundraising of $10m annually. The Society currently has an endowment of $30 million and an annual budget approaching $10 million. The board desires to use these resources to continually expand the work of the organization, while to continuing The Society’s historic work of providing programs to benefit the welfare of animals across the greater Chicago area.
This objective will require the president to develop a long term vision, recruit and develop the organization’s team, and to appeal to a variety of constituents both inside and outside the organization. This will also require compelling leadership to guide the team in a collaborative and motivated fashion. The new president be the external face of The Anti-Cruelty Society to leverage, cultivate, and expand the current activities while expanding into new activities with new supporters and funders.
The new president will also drive increased visibility and presence of The Anti-Cruelty Society throughout the animal welfare community. The new president will possess strong leadership skills and this leadership will be recognized by staff, the volunteers, and by the community served by The Society.
Requirements: The board of The Anti-Cruelty Society seeks to recruit an exceptionally talented new president for the organization to replace the recently retired previous president. This person will provide both tactical and strategic leadership for the organization. The person will have offices located at The Society’s headquarters in Chicago.
The president reports directly to the board. Four Vice Presidents (CFO, Operations, Development, and Marketing) report directly to the president. The person that we seek will replace the previous president who is retiring after 15 years of successful service to The Society.
Specifically, the board seeks a candidate for this role who possesses the following attributes:
Leadership: The person we seek will have successful leadership experience at a not for profit organization involved with animal welfare with approximately the same scale. Because a highly motivated and involved team is essential to the success of the organization, the person that we seek must also have demonstrated expertise working with a professional staff, volunteers, and other constituents both in mobilizing and in directing their activities. While the person we seek may not have already had a position of similar scale and breadth, we seek a person with the intelligence, leadership, motivation, and energy to quickly grow into this leadership role at one of the pre-eminent animal welfare organizations in the United States.
Development Experience: This person will be a charismatic and experienced fundraiser who can be successful at raising up to $10m annually with a strong Chicago-based funding network. This will require a person who has exceptional presentation and communications skills. We seek a person who can employ all contemporary fund raising techniques including social media, corporate and governmental grants, and individual contributions.
Program Knowledge and Mission: Zoological experience and knowledge of the animal welfare arena as well as an unqualified and driving commitment to animal welfare is crucial to the success of the person in this role. This commitment will be evidenced by a hands on approach to activities in the organization, a compelling spoke person approach to advancing the aims of The Society, and a strong commitment to the next generation of constituents in the animal welfare arena. This might include successful experience in such organizations as animal shelters, zoos, animal parks and sanctuaries, animal welfare societies, or veterinary organizations and hospitals.
Administrative skills: The successful candidate must have strong administrative skills and should have experience building and executing an annual budget and implementing structured programs in a disciplined and timely manner. This person will also have experience directing and developing a professional staff.
Character and integrity: The successful candidate will possess pristine personal integrity and character. The Anti-Cruelty Society board includes prominent individuals from around the Chicago area and the president of The Society represents this group in the community.
