If you are a veterinarian and are interested in a future in the growing field of animal behavior, the Angell Animal Medical Center (AAMC) is seeking applicants who are Board-certified, have completed a conforming behavior residency or who are approved in a non-conforming training program. We have an opening for a Veterinary Behaviorist who will serve both the needs of our hospital clientele and of our Shelter animals as well as participate in clinical research.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Angell is a non-profit hospital owned by the world renowned Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Angell, founded in 1915, is recognized internationally as a leader in animal medicine and has the reputation as one of the finest veterinary teaching hospitals in North America, caring for approximately 90,000 animals a year.
Angell serves the greater Boston and scenic New England area as a primary care facility, a 24-hour emergency hospital, and as a tertiary referral center. Angell offered the very first veterinary internship in the world beginning in 1941, running continuously to present day. Angell was instrumental in establishing specialty veterinary medicine. Our hospital has a long history of providing training not only to veterinary interns and residents but also to veterinary students and the veterinary community at large.
Our Staff Behavior Veterinarian will consult in small animal behavior cases, conducting health and behavior evaluations, prescribing medication as needed, and will write, teach (to the client), and follow up on individualized behavior plans. The candidate will work closely with our staff Ph.D. applied animal behavior analyst, as well as a team of behaviorists and trainers, and will conduct behavioral and ethological research on both owned and MSPCA shelter animals for the purposes of publication.
Angell may be big and fast paced but we are a close knit community that supports one another. Walk the halls of our 80,000 square foot hospital and get “curbside” opinions from the 55 Senior Staff with 39 Boarded Specialty Veterinarians on staff.
The Behavior field is a growing reward-filled field, with pets facing greater behavioral needs than ever before. Our community of pets is rife with poorly-raised and sometimes traumatized animals, and we are called upon to help both them and the animals in our Shelter. Towards that end, in our unique Department, we feature in-house classes for dogs, in Obedience, Agility, Nosework and Canine Good Citizen Prep, along with Puppy Socialization classes; we even have socialization class for kittens. Thus, the MSPCA-Angell behaviorist can refer in-house for the dog whose behavior is improving, and can get referrals from dogs that are struggling in classes. In 2018, our behaviorists saw over 700 Behavior cases, and 1500 dogs went through our classes.
Currently, due to our excellent reputation with local veterinarians and others in the community, our Behavior Department is booking with a 6 month wait for private appointments.
Outstanding compensation package commensurate with experience and qualifications includes health and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, generous CE stipend and paid holidays, sick and vacation time with free on-site Boston parking. Relocation package can be negotiated.
This position provides a unique opportunity to join a well-known and respected non-profit organization which clearly delivers on its mission of advancing the health and welfare of animals.
Applicants must be Board-certified, have completed a conforming behavior residency or be approved in a non-conforming training program.
Preferred candidates will also have experience in Animal Shelter Medicine, additionally, the ideal candidate would demonstrate cursory knowledge of, or have direct experience with, applied animal behavior analysis.
