Position Overview:
Full performance level in the Veterinary Technician occupation under general administrative supervision and under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian according to Ohio Revised Code 4741.01 and 955.16, assists in providing veterinary and kennel care for animals in the care and custody of the county. Performs the material and substantial duties of the classification more than 50% of the time.
Summary of Job Duties:
Receives, evaluates, treats for illness and/or injury, and processes animals delivered to the animal care facility, performs physical examinations and maintain records for animals, effectively communicates preventative medicine, treatment protocols, dental health, and medical and surgical procedures to shelter staff, prepares and dispenses medications according to prescription, performs drug dosage calculations and maintains controlled drug records, administers treatments and/or medications, applies wound dressings, bandages and splints, collects and prepares specimens for clinical laboratory procedures, performs clinical laboratory procedures, identifies internal, external, and blood parasites for sheltered animals, provides emergency treatment and/or routine health care for sheltered animals, assists in the selection, designation and preparation of animals for adoption, assists in the selection, designation and preparation of animals to be euthanized and performs euthanasia procedure as necessary and/or directed, insures all medical equipment & medical supplies, medications and all other equipment and supply needs are met.
Prepares equipment, instruments, animals and medications for surgical procedures, assists veterinarian with ill and/or injured animals, transports or assists in transporting animals between facilities as needed, administers and effectively monitors anesthesia, including anesthetic induction, maintenance and recovery, assists in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures, administers and monitors intensive nursing care including fluid therapy and nutritional management, monitors physical condition of animals and sanitary/disease control conditions of shelter facility.
Provides animal care information to general public, routinely works with public in areas of health care, behavior, spay/neuter, performs kenneling duties including feeding, watering and cleaning/sanitation as needed.
Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology, a registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Ohio. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
