An Interview with Maddie
An older Retriever patient at Clarksburg Animal Hospital
How long have you been a patient at Clarksburg Animal Hospital?
About half my life. I used to go to a much larger, less personal vet hospital when I was younger. They were ok, but my humans have learned much better how to manage my nutrition and behavior and understand my medical needs since coming here. The humans at Clarksburg Animal Hospital really listen to me and my humans and take the time to educate us. I get to see the same nice people over and over and they always remember me and what I like best when I’m there. The humans that work there seem to stay there for a long time and have good memories.
What is your favorite thing about Clarksburg Animal Hospital?
They are always gentle and kind and welcoming. What I notice most is the positive energy I feel from them. Everyone laughs and enjoys their jobs as well as each other even when it seems a bit hectic. They really notice and ask what my humans and I are worried about and help us through our worries with ideas and education as well as a plan.
How is your health?
Pretty good for my age. Most humans think I’m younger than I am, but ladies don’t tell their age! They get lots of good detailed information about me from my humans and talk about all the different ways to keep me feeling good. I come to see them a few times a year and they always remember me. They added a laser for any aches and pains I may have as well as a handheld ultrasound to check my insides if needed. I hope I don’t need them, but I’m glad to know the option is there.
How often do you see them?
My humans are dedicated to taking me in for check-ups twice a year and I have some other follow-ups in between sometimes. I’m lucky that I have humans who have learned so much that they see the value in my medical team and are willing to get me the care I need.
What concerns you about your visits to Clarksburg Animal Hospital?
Even though she’s doing a great job, I can tell Dr. Greta is tired sometimes and could use some help. I’ve heard her say that she needs another doctor so I don’t have to wait as long for appointments. I hope the new doctor will be as kind and thoughtful and intuitive. Dr. Greta could teach them a lot and she’s also a great at listening and learning from others. It’s a very special place with lots of good people and great opportunities to really learn about managing all the details of my health, not just the more obvious ones.
How does everyone at Clarksburg Animal Hospital act when your humans aren’t there?
They laugh with each other even more. They even have a sense of humor when someone makes a mistake and there’s no judgement. They still work together with respect and relaxed positive energy that is comforting even though it’s a bit stressful to be at the doctor’s office.
Have you noticed any recent changes?
They have added more humans to help Dr. Greta. The hospital has been looking much more like a home with the renovations that are in progress. I’ve heard they are adding some other services like full mobile ultrasound and echocardiograms as well as the laser and handheld ultrasound I mentioned earlier. Thankfully, I haven’t needed those yet, but I’m glad it’s there if I do. I’ve heard them all contribute ideas on improving the hospital. It’s fun to hear them brain storm together.
Is there any downside to Clarksburg Animal Hospital?
No one there works long hours and sometimes I have to wait a bit to get help from them. I think they must take more time to walk in the park or play ball so they stay happier. My humans worry when we have to wait longer for an appointment or go see the emergency doctors because there isn’t enough of Dr. Greta to go around. More of those vet hospitals are like my first one where it was very busy and not so thoughtful and thorough or personal. Those humans seem less connected to their patients as well as my humans and didn’t seem as happy at work. They should try it at Clarksburg Animal Hospital. I’m sure they would smile more. Plus they have tasty treats, but I’m not picky with food items!
