Job ads can all start to sound the same. What you really need when you’re job-hunting is to hear what it’s like to work there, especially when you’re replacing someone who’s leaving.
So please let me, as the person who is leaving, tell you what it’s actually like to work at Shiloh Veterinary Hospital.
The Team Totally Rocks.
The client care and technical teams are the beating heart of SVH. They are bodyguards and rock stars at the same time. They step between us and upset clients, they catch mistakes we’ve made, and they are unfailingly kind. No technician has ever left SVH because they weren’t getting to use their skills enough – because of them, I’ve gotten to spend more of my time doing doctor things than at any other hospital. Bullies, toxic personalities, and people who like too much drama simply don’t last here, because the culture maintained by the rest of the team just doesn’t have room for those things.
Ownership Is Right There – and They Actually Care About You.
It’s rare these days to find a big practice that isn’t owned by a corporation. SVH currently has four partners – three practicing vets and the practice manager – who each offer different strengths and support the team in different capacities. They encourage each of us to find ways to grow within the team by doing what we love and do well, and they support us when we don’t think another fit-in is the best choice for the patient or a tired team. While I won’t lie and say that change always happens fast here, I can tell you that there’s more autonomy, trust, good will, and owners in the trenches with you at SVH than anywhere else I’ve worked.
You’ll Almost Never Practice Alone.
There’s a collaborative feel within the large team of doctors. We consult with each other on cases ALL the time, and listen when we’re having a tough day. I’ve been saved in surgery more than once, and I’ve never felt like I was in a competition.
Fear Free – Branded or Not – Is the Only Way to Practice.
Now that I’ve worked at a Fear Free hospital, I will never again watch while anyone pins a dog down for a nail trim, drags a cat out of a carrier by the scruff, or lets an owner insist “he’s just being dramatic, do it anyway” while their pet cowers in a corner when it’s time for vaccines. Do you need a certification to learn to listen to what dogs and cats are telling you, or to practice humanely and empathetically? Of course not. But certification is a commitment that every single person on that team will do and support those things, every time, with every pet. I sleep better at night knowing I haven’t caused irreversible emotional pain, and I think I can say the same for our team.
Shiloh Has the Stuff – What It Needs Is You.
Most job ads talk about all the equipment they have, the state-of-the-art facility, the bells and whistles. Equipment doesn’t do much good when clients don’t know you care. SVH has all the good stuff, but its people are the real secret sauce. I joke that SVH has ruined me for other clinics, but it’s really not a joke – this is a unicorn team and the medicine is progressive and excellent. Don’t settle for working in a place where you can’t be yourself, grow your strengths, or trust your team and be trusted in return. See if Shiloh’s a fit.
