Essential Job Tasks

Recommends, develops, implements, and manages veterinary processes, programs, and systems that address health and disease prevention needs in a shelter environment. Ensures all animals are cared for in accordance with generally accepted sheltering guidelines and standards
Performs physical examinations, vaccinations, and diagnostics to determine and evaluate the health condition of animals at the time of impound, before adoption, or presentation for surgery
Administers medical treatments and surgical procedures, including sterilizing adoptable animals, monitoring anesthesia and recovery of animals, and performing post-surgical evaluation and treatment
Plays an active role in pathway planning for animals in conjunction with multiple MCACC divisions
Observes or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior, document findings, and approve the release of animals from rabies quarantine
Supplies and is responsible for the Veterinarian Premise and DEA license for both shelters and ensures compliance. Creates and monitors drug logs to comply with federal and state laws
Instructs, trains, and advises all staff on proper care, medical treatment, and other animal health-related issues, including the development of veterinary or animal health handouts
Manages the veterinarian medical team. Ensures the highest quality veterinary care, staff engagement, and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team
Position Qualifications

Education
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine
Experience
Four years of clinical veterinary medicine experience
Two years of experience managing or leading other veterinarians or clinic staff
Other Requirements
Valid Arizona Veterinarian license, or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain Arizona licensure by the time of hire
Drug Enforcement Agency certification
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire

Advanced surgical experience or training in prepubescent sterilizations in a high-volume setting
