Mixed animal clinic in rural South Dakota practice fluctuates services with the seasons. Each month presents itself with different situations for our team to handle. If you want more equine spring and summer and bovine and companion are year-round.
Every month small animal vaccination and dental and surgery, January is our slowest month with fertility testing of bulls, some stallion collection and freezing semen. February brings more bulls to test and the beginning of calving seasons. C-sections are hauled in and we have a calf hospital to IV calves. March and April calving continues and we finish big herds of bull testing by end of April our equine breeding season has started. May our barn may be full of mare to breed live cover, semen shipped in for frozen and fresh AI.
June sees the mares finishing up their breeding and a quiet time before we start ultra-sounding heifers in July, August and September along with Bangs vaccinations, calf work and other herd work. October continues preg-checking and calf work but slows a little during pheasant hunting season, the clinic sees hunter's dogs that have been injured while on the hunt. November and December finish calf work and preg-checking. that is if the weather cooperates and we start a few fertility test on bulls.
Our clinic sees countless small animal problems from digestion, eyes, teeth and orthopedic surgery on many dogs, some cats and sometime a goat. Small Animal vaccinations along with some yearly dentals. Surgical AI on K-9 brings clients from several hours away from time to time. K-9 boarding kennels keep our dog walkers busy most weekends of the year.
The nearby sale barn supplies us Monday sheep, goat and pig sales which need a health certificates and possibly ultrasound a herd of sheep or goats. Wednesday cattle sales are bigger in the winter months than summer and a bi monthly horse sale needs services from our Coggins lab.
