About the Position

As a team, we collaborate to ensure the wellness of the animals in our care, treat injuries and illnesses, and perform high-quality, high-volume spay/ neuter.  We are also responsible for writing health certificates for out-of-state transports and administering rabies vaccines to in-house animals and privately-owned animals during vaccine clinics.  We embrace Fear Free values to ensure animals are treated humanely and with respect.  We partner closely with the shelter care teams to provide the best recommendations for the animals that enter our shelter.  We do all this while maintaining a 4-day work week.

Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.

• Examines impounded, in-house, and fostered shelter animals; performs diagnostics; creates treatment plans; prescribes therapeutics, and determines appropriate disposition for incoming animals
• Executes high-quality, high-volume spay or neuter, including pediatric patients, on a rotating basis. Performs dental extractions; reads and interprets radiograph studies; performs non-witnessed, owner-requested euthanasia
• Evaluates animals for release from bite quarantine
• Maintains medical records
• Monitors, dispenses, and logs controlled substances according to DEA standards
• Participates in biweekly vaccination clinics onsite at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control
• Provides training as requested to clinic, shelter, and field staff members
• Delivers a high level of customer service to external and internal clients
• Complies with all state laws relating to the veterinary practice as well as adherence to internal policies and procedures

Working Conditions

Work is predominantly performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments and behaviors, excessive noise, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and Zoonotic Diseases. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery and/or uneven and rough and perform duties that require lifting, bending, and stooping.

• Valid Arizona Veterinarian license, or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain Arizona licensure by the time of hire
• Valid United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) license 
• Drug Enforcement Agency Certification 
• Candidates must be flexible and able to work all shifts, including starting as early as 7:00 AM and finishing as late as 6:00 PM, working weekends and holidays. Employees can be assigned to any shift, with any combination of days off, determined by the Department's needs. However, the focus is placed on consistent scheduling to allow for work-life balance

Our Preferred Candidate has:

• Three or more years of experience as a veterinarian 
• Experience as a veterinarian at a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic or animal shelter
• Experience using Chameleon software
