If you want to earn a small animal salary while growing our equine practice, this might be the job for you!
Riverside Veterinary Hospital is an established mixed animal practice in Goode, VA, halfway between Bedford and Lynchburg. Our practice has been seeing small animals for over 15 years. Our large animal side, though, is brand new, and we are looking for someone to help it grow, while helping us handle our expanding small animal caseload. We are currently a 2 doctor practice, with one small animal only and one mixed animal doctor.
We started offering mobile large animal services last year for our practice, and to our surprise, our equine requests are booming. Our current mixed animal associate is more interested in ruminants, and did not receive advanced equine training. We are offering basic equine wellness, dentistry, and emergencies so far. Someone with an aptitude or interest in areas such as lameness, advanced dentistry, and/or reproduction could easily begin to expand our clientele. There’s a huge opportunity for growth here. We are routinely turning down appointment requests for these more equine-specific services.
Our current associate will be focusing on growing the cattle side of the business once you’re focusing on the horses. You’ll get the majority of the routinely scheduled equine work. The best part about it is that we are FULLY flexible. Don’t want to mess with PPEs? Just say so. Love lameness but hate dentals? Okay by us. This position can be best suited to you and your interests. It will require you to be self-motivated and mostly self-sufficient, so it may not be the best position for a new grad looking for mentorship (unless you’re confident and up for a challenge).
We have a Ibex Evo II ultrasound, mobile digital x-ray, ProFloat power float, and more. If you want something (equipment or drugs) and can justify it, we will buy it for you.
While the equine side is growing, you’ll be in the small animal hospital. If you’re wanting to transition from full-time equine to small animal, we will help you fill any gaps in your small animal knowledge. We see a wide variety of cases, medical and surgical, and have an established relationship with local referral hospitals for more advanced care. Just like most small animal hospitals, we are busting at the seams with appointment requests, so the small animal portion will make up no less than 50% of your caseload.
On-call will be split equally between you and our current associate. How we do so is up for discussion. You will need to be willing to see some non-equine after-hours emergencies, which at this point are rare. We also share call with several other solo practitioners in the area when they are out of town (or we are!). We currently see non-client emergencies while we’re growing the business, but you can decline them if you want, no pressure.
Oh yeah, and the salary? Depending on your level of experience, you will be getting a six figure plus base salary. For large animal calls, you get an additional 15% of the gross bill. You get 100% of the emergency fee. Other standard benefits also included.
