The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (SVMBS), Texas A&M University is excited to invite applicants to a full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in veterinary anesthesia on an 11-month appointment, with an anticipated start date in Spring or Fall 2023. The Anesthesia Service is expanding to six full-time faculty that have a critical role in student education, patient care, and scholarship. The service is also staffed with 13 technicians and a rotation of three anesthesia residents distributed among the Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals and the Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center of our Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).
The successful candidate will devote approximately 40% time (negotiable) to clinical instruction and patient care distributed among the VMTH Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals and Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment center. The remaining time will be devoted to integrative classroom and laboratory teaching (15%), research and other scholarly activities (35%), and academic citizenship (10%). Clinical responsibilities will include primary management of cases, instruction of veterinary students and technicians, mentorship of interns and residents, and participation in after-hours emergency coverage. Classroom and laboratory teaching responsibilities will include the education of professional students in our integrated curriculum and opportunities to interface with graduate students across multiple disciplines. Active supervision of house officers and in-depth participation in intern/resident training (including topic rounds, journal club, and back-up support) is expected. Additionally, we expect the successful candidate will develop a strong, independent research program that aligns with expertise in the department, school, and university and builds collaborations with other basic and clinical scientists. Teamwork and collaboration are highly valued at Texas A&M University, and candidates are expected to demonstrate institutional citizenship that may include service to committees, working groups, and professional organizations.
The VMTH is a spacious facility with sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including but not limited to color-flow Doppler ultrasonography, 4D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, digital fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, 40 slice CT, 3T MRI, video endoscopy, nuclear imaging, acid-base/blood-gas analyzers, oxygen and inhalant gas analyzers, standard coagulation as well as TEG and PFA analyzers, intraoperative cell salvage transfusion equipment, phacoemulsification system, high-flow oxygen therapy, and an ICU telemetry system. A state-of-the-art electronic anesthesia scheduling/case-tracking system along with 19 new Mindray anesthesia multiparameter monitors with a central anesthesia station allows the Texas A&M University Anesthesia Service to be one of the most sophisticated in the world. The Anesthesia Service also has its own ultrasound for locoregional blocks, peripheral nerve stimulators, pediatric and adult patient ventilators, Mindray WATO anesthesia station, spirometry, one-lung ventilation devices, and a 15-camera monitoring system used to remotely view all equine recoveries as well as radiation therapy cases. Radiation capabilities include TomoTherapy and iridium implant brachytherapy. Surgical suites and instrumentation allow for complex orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac, thoracic, oncologic, and abdominal procedures such as stereotactic brain biopsies, cardiac occlusive device implantation, and subcutaneous ureteral bypass device placement. Research equipment available, but not limited to, includes lithium and thermodilution cardiac output monitoring, thermal threshold testing, and mechanical threshold testing.
The VMTH has capable personnel including, but not limited to talented ICU technicians, an active multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, two in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trials coordinator.
Numerous research opportunities exist throughout the school and university. Laboratory space is available as needed and the SVMBS has a pool of qualified graduate students seeking a degree in biomedical sciences. A generous start-up package will be available commensurate with the scholarly record and needs of the individual. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with approximately 80 small and large animal faculty members and an active group of house officers that includes more than 50 interns and residents from other medical and surgical disciplines.
