The Department of Clinical Sciences in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University applications for full-time assistant or associate clinical professor (continuous term track; tenure-equivalent) in emergency and critical care (ECC). This position focuses on clinical activity and clinical teaching within the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. We seek an enthusiastic, team-oriented clinician who will provide outstanding patient care, client care, and service to our referring veterinarians. A commitment to student learning and house officer training is expected.
The Department of Clinical Sciences includes small animal and large animal faculty members, and is comprised of ~70 faculty positions. The Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) is a specialty and emergency hospital, caring for approximately 35,000 animals per year. The FHSA hosts the majority of small animal specialties and is AAHA-accredited. An established Clinical Trials Office broadly coordinates ongoing active investigations and evaluations of new therapies, medical devices, and diagnostic tests. Additional features include ACVECC Veterinary Trauma Center Level 1 designation, VECCS Level 1 Facility certification, a dialysis service, a 1.5T MRI, helical multi-slice CT (being upgraded to 160-slice), fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy/arthroscopy, interventional radiology suite, minimally invasive procedures service, and a Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy.
The ECC program supports an emergency service that receives approximately 15,000 cases each year and an adjacent ICU that houses approximately 2,000 critically ill patients per year. Services are provided 24 hours/7 days a week. We are an open ICU and collaborate with our colleagues in other specialty services to provide the highest quality patient care. The ECC program offers a dynamic learning-centered environment that consists of 8 faculty, 12 residents and 15 rotating interns. Our faculty team works closely together to create a supportive, progressive, and sustainable working environment for all members of the team.
This position requires at least 30 weeks of assigned clinical time (including evenings and weekends). The remaining activities are allocated according to rank and interests, with 3 – 6 weeks for service-related activities, 5 – 10 weeks for research and scholarly activity, and 5 – 8 weeks for off-clinic teaching. (Total annual work commitment is 47 weeks, with the remaining time for vacation and other time off.) The selected candidate is expected to assist with DVM and house officer education, including board preparation sessions, journal club, DVM clinical skills laboratories, and communications training. Clinical professor track appointments are weighted to clinical and educational activity, but faculty members are still expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline. Independent and collaborative research opportunities exist. Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, with strengths in emergency medicine, critical care, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, musculoskeletal disease, and infectious disease. Additional unique resources at Cummings School include the Clinical Research Shared Resource, the Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource and the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory.
The successful candidate must hold a DVM (or equivalent) degree and must have completed an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC) approved residency prior to the start date. The position requires certification by ACVECC or ECVECC, with certification being achieved prior to or no later than two years after the initial hire date. Preference will be given to individuals who hold ACVECC or ECVECC board certification and who have post-residency clinical experience. Evidence of collegiality is required. The ability to excel in clinical and didactic teaching is expected, as is a demonstration of pursuit of scholarly activity appropriate for a clinical track position. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
