Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute is currently seeking an Attending Veterinarian & Director of Comparative Medicine to join the Institute. Under general direction, the Attending Veterinarian & Director of Comparative Medicine will oversee and direct both the strategic and operational activities of the Lovelace research animal program. Will provide guidance and supervision for husbandry, veterinary services, research support, pharmacy, study scheduling and related administrative personnel.
The responsibilities include fiscal management, and strategic planning to meet projected needs of the Institute with relation to research animal support staff as well as housing and care of animals for research. In addition is responsible for establishing and monitoring all animal care and use standards at the Institute to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, provide oversight of the program to assure medical care of all animals including diagnosis and treatment of disease, preventative medicine, health monitoring, and quarantine; and performing all other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.
This position is responsible for all AAALAC reviews and must assure Institutional compliance to maintain Institutional Accreditation. Participation in the activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and interaction with the Institutional Official is required.
Will also identify staffing needs and available expertise, provide leadership and mentoring to all department staff, direct the recruiting and selection process for all departmental positions, and work with the Human Resources Department as needed on performance evaluations, training and development of staff.
Requires Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an AVMA accredited program, ACLAM certification, DEA license, and at least 10 years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility with 5 years’ experience in a managerial role; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities and have been attained.
Must have the knowledge and ability to ensure compliance with USDA standards and the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH Public Health Service Policy, FDA GLP regulations, DEA Regulations, AAALAC guidelines, and all state, county and city rules and regulations. Candidates must have a demonstrated understanding of research methodology, principles and procedures.
Requires previous experience effectively leading a large team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and the ability to prioritize departmental functions and responsibilities to meet deadlines and goals. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate previous success in developing professional and effective relationships with both administrative and non-administrative managers and colleagues, and the ability to effectively communicate research needs to Institute leadership.
Must have superior professional-level written and verbal communication skills; a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy and discretion; excellent judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills; and strong customer-service skills. Demonstrated ability in managing a wide variety of complex tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting multiple deadlines is required. The ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with solid judgment and discretion is critical, as well as the ability to perform duties independently.
This position is primarily located on Kirtland Air Force Base and requires a valid Driver's License and proof of insurance as well as successful completion of a background check, post offer pre-employment physical exam and ability to receive various vaccinations.
Advanced non-veterinary scientific degree (Ph.D., M.S., etc.) and DACLAM Certification is preferred.
