PURPOSE: To provide zoological/wildlife medicine experience to veterinary students. This is an unpaid position. Students must provide their own insurance, transportation and housing.
DUTIES:
- Shadowing and exposure to many aspect of zoological/wildlife/aquatic animal medicine
- Student will propose a final project focusing on an area of interest, to be presented to VLM staff
- Assist the museum’s veterinary technician as needed
- Perform necropsies under the guidance of the veterinarian
- Care for hospitalized patients
- Medical record keeping
- Must be a current veterinary medical student
- Strong interest in wildlife/zoological medicine
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted (50 pounds assisted)
- Ability to follow all safety guidelines to ensure welfare of animals and safety of volunteers and staff
- Recent pre-exposure rabies vaccination or adequate titer within the last 2 years
- Tetanus booster within the last 10 years
