The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Population Medicine, announces an outstanding opportunity for a clinical (100% appointment) faculty position in Large Animal Surgery (LAS) at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. 

Primary duties will include clinical responsibilities in the Large Animal Surgery (LAS) service of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The successful candidate is expected to provide care and oversight of equine and food and fiber (llamas/alpacas, pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle) cases. This position will include elective daytime primary or backup services for large animal surgical and sports medicine/lameness cases, as well as emergency service and consultations to local veterinarians. The anticipated workload distribution is negotiable but is expected to have at least 60% clinical service and clinical teaching (includes emergency coverage shared among 3 faculty). The remaining distribution of efforts in the section and department is negotiable with the successful candidate but is expected to include some didactic teaching, research, and/or collegiate/professional service and outreach. Teaching responsibilities will include providing clinical instruction to interns, residents, and professional students as they rotate through the LAS service and participation in various large animal didactic courses and rounds, including seminars and journal club. Other job responsibilities include personal development, outreach, and service to the College of Veterinary Medicine and other veterinary-related professional organizations. 

There are many opportunities for collaborative research within the College, as well as with faculty across the University of Minnesota corridor of health sciences that includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry. Team and Facilities: This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a rewarding career in a collaborative, specialty-based teaching hospital. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic, cohesive, patient-care-oriented LAS team composed of three ACVS board-certified surgeons (one tenured, and two clinical), 3 house officers (either 1 surgery resident and 2 surgery interns, or 2 surgery residents and 1 surgery intern), and 3 dedicated surgery technicians (along with additional 24/7 technical support). You will work mostly in the 50,000-square-foot Leatherdale Equine Center (opened in 2007) which includes the Piper Equine Hospital, the Barenscheer Arena and the Nutrena Conference Center, and will also spend some time in the Large Animal Hospital. The Piper Equine Hospital contains state-of-the-art surgical, and advanced imaging equipment, experienced support staff, and collegial colleagues. The caseload is roughly 85% equine with the remainder being mostly llamas/alpacas, pigs, and goats with a few sheep and cattle. The hospital is well-equipped with a spacious OR that includes advanced surgical equipment (arthroscopic and laparoscopic towers, staplers and electrocautery devices for GI surgery, and AO compatible orthopedic equipment including locking plates) and a C-arm unit.  Additional diagnostic equipment include VetRocket DR imaging, digital ultrasound, Hallmarq Standing Equine MRI, Asto CT Equine Standing CT, a dynamic endoscope, Lameness Locator, and high-speed treadmill and force plate.  Treatment modalities include an ESWT unit, PRP, IRAP, and APS equipment. Teaching space is available in the Nutrena Conference room, and teaching horses are available and housed in the 14 stall Dudley barn and paddocks located behind the equine center. The Large Animal Hospital is located a few blocks away from the Equine Center and contains the facilities for food and fiber patients, nuclear scintigraphy, and isolation.

• Time spent off the clinic floor is flexible such that working from home is encouraged if otherwise not required to be physically present at the workplace.
• Financial compensation is currently provided if the faculty is physically needed in the hospital for emergency support.
• The UMN has floating holidays often incorporated near Christmas and New Years, commonly creating 4-day weekends. The hospital caseload decreases between Christmas and New Years to emergency cases only, allowing more faculty and staff time off during the holidays.

The Veterinary Population Medicine Department specializes in large animal health and production, biomedical science, and public health. Research: Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Teaching: The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology.
