The Johns Hopkins Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology offers externship programs in both Veterinary Pathology and Laboratory Animal Medicine. Externs will work side by side with our trainees, and benefit from the expertise of our veterinarians that are DACVP and or DACLAM faculty mentors
Programs
The Laboratory Animal Medicine externship provides clinical experience with a broad variety of species ranging from rodents to nonhuman primates. LAM externs accompany program residents on their rounds, including at our macaque breeding colonies, and have the opportunity to do routine clinical procedures. They assist in anesthesia and surgery; aid in the training of researchers and MDs using animal models and participate in ACLAM boards review activities.
The Veterinary Pathology externships allow for participation in necropsies of animals from our facilities, private veterinary practitioners, the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium. Pathology externs will review slides with boarded pathologists and participate in gross and histopathology rounds.
Both externships provide extensive hands-on experience.
Qualification
Veterinary students in their 3rd and 4th year of their veterinary training are welcome to immerse themselves in our training program for two (2) weeks. This is an unpaid externship and availability of positions is limited.

The Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine carries out the three-fold mission of research, teaching, and service through its expertise in veterinary medicine, pathology, and animal models of disease. Training of veterinary scientists in comparative medicine and comparative pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine began in the 1960s and continues today.
Current faculty research areas include animal models of HIV/AIDS, cancer, degenerative CNS diseases, cardiovascular disease, developmental biology, hematology/immunology, and rickettsial, parasitic, and infectious diseases. Faculty, residents, and post-doctoral fellows share their expertise in veterinary pathology and animal models with other investigators in other departments and work to insure the health and welfare of laboratory animals at Johns Hopkins.
