Summary
The Shelter Medicine Veterinarian will work collaboratively with a team committed to providing quality and compassionate service to animals. The veterinarians and animal healthcare professionals of the Bangor Humane Society provide a variety of services including: exams, vaccinations, dental services, heartworm prevention/treatment, and other miscellaneous surgical procedures. The Bangor Humane Society (BHS) cares for upwards of 2,200 animals annually through shelters, foster home programs, adoptions, and various community support initiatives designed to keep pets in their homes. The shelter is located in beautiful Bangor, Maine. The veterinarian provides the highest quality of care, including overseeing daily rounds of in-house patients, examination of shelter/foster-based pets, surgical procedures and treatments for shelter/foster animals. The veterinarian also works collaboratively to ensure operating efficiency and effectively grow the BHS Shelter Medicine Program.
Our Ideal Candidate:
A licensed veterinarian with 4 or more years of clinical experience. HQSVSN experience is a plus.

Responsibilities Include:
Work collaboratively with shelter management team to meet programmatic goals and fulfill BHS’ mission.
Shelter Veterinarian provides leadership by example and works collaboratively with all staff as an integral team member.
Practice veterinary medicine from a shelter-centric perspective in accordance with BHS policies and within budgetary guidelines.
Responsible for medical and surgical protocols and ensures BHS’ compliance with state and federal requirements and to ensure that they follow and are in accordance with industry standard best-practices and are aligned with our mission.
Responsible for developing and overseeing implementation of disease management and prevention protocols in conjunction with management team.
Provide emergency and non-emergency medical treatment of shelter animals and foster animals.
Ability to perform routine surgical procedures including HQHV spay/neuter and have experience performing sterilization surgeries on juveniles, cryptorchidism and pregnant animals, and specialized surgical procedures (including but not limited to; femoral head ostectomy, enucleation, amputation, cranial cruciate ligament repair, foreign body obstruction, etc.). Training and mentorship can also be provided on these more advanced procedures.
Perform vaccination and microchip clinics and education through BHS’ community outreach program.
Assist other members of medical team in counseling adopters, foster homes or potential adopters with regards to medical care/needs of shelter animals.
Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
Perform humane euthanasia as required and certify qualified staff members.
Work collaboratively with local veterinary practices to ensure consistent high quality care for all animals.
Work with medical team in maintaining all medical records and utilize shelter animal management software.
Supervising the use of prescription medications and controlled substances, and logging usage as required by the Maine Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA).
Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure.
Perform other various duties as assigned by Executive Director.
Specific Job Skills:
Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Maine or ability to get said license and must complete all professional requirements to maintain their license.
Enthusiasm for and experiences in shelter medicine strongly desired.
Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of animal welfare in Maine.
Ability to conduct high quality, high volume surgical sterilizations in a fast paced environment.
Possess or have the ability to obtain a DEA license.
Basic computer literacy is required.
Minimum of four years working in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or high-volume spay/neuter clinic preferred.
Proven organizational skills and effective communication.

The ideal canidate must be able to prioritize and handle high-stress levels. The position requires excellent organizational skills, as well as a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. The candidate must also be dependable and have a proven ability to meet deadlines. The candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and follow detailed instructions without the need for constant support.
Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required.
Ability to lift and carry 50lbs for 100 feet.
Ability to humanely restrain and work with animals of unknown dispositions and those who may exhibit medical or other problems, as well as aggressive animals.
Vaccinated against Rabies.
