Additional Information:
2 openings available.
Estimated Externship Workload: We aim to provide an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and skill base. Externs will be assigned to a different veterinarian on a daily basis to see ambulatory and clinic cases. Externs will be expected to participate in and observe all aspects of daily practice, including outpatient appointments, ambulatory calls, and surgery. On weeknights and weekends, the extern is expected to assist treating hospitalized patients when necessary.
Goals of the Externship: This is a hands-on externship that will expose veterinary students to a variety of diagnostic and treatment disciplines. The primary emphasis of our practice is lameness diagnosis and treatment; however, students will gain experience in internal medicine, ophthalmology, anesthesia and emergency cases which include primary emergencies in the field and referral emergencies at our hospital. Our aim is to provide students with a realistic example of private practice in the performance horse industry, while allowing them the opportunity to enhance their clinical experiences. This externship also provides the practice an opportunity to develop a working relationship with prospective interns. Please note that if and externship is completed prior a student’s clinical year it may be ideal but not necessary to return for a second externship to be considered for the internship program.
Application Process: Please send a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, and the name of a veterinary reference to extern@fairfieldequine.com. Please include your first and second choices for dates of visitation in the letter.
