The Spayed Club (TSC), a well-established community based non-profit veterinary clinic in Delaware County, PA (20 minutes from Center City Philadelphia), is seeking an experienced full-time or part-time veterinarian to join our Primary Care Clinic team. The ideal applicant will have strong assessment skills and the ability to practice high quality medicine with an understanding that our client base has limited financial resources. This is a unique opportunity to serve veterinary needs in an underserved population while being supported by the organization’s mature endowment and grants.
TSC is unique in that it is a not-for-profit veterinary clinic. It is not an animal shelter or rescue organization, nor is it a clinic that provides just “essential” care for cats and dogs. It operates through grants that allow TSC to subsidize fees. Our client base consists of owned pets, cats and dogs under the auspices of rescues, and unowned community cats managed by local trappers and Trap Neuter Release (TNR) organizations. No animal is turned away and no animal is euthanized because of capacity limitations or the inability for pet owners to afford care. We embrace the concept that a pet enhances one’s life and diligently work with our clients to keep their pets in their homes.
The Spayed Club is housed in a custom-built, 1-year old veterinary facility in Collingdale, PA and contains 4 modern surgical tables, 2 dental tables, dental x-ray equipment, 3 exam rooms, and surgical and medical treatment areas. ClinicHQ, a cloud-based clinic management software, is used to record patient treatments and services.
TSC consists of a HQHV Spay/Neuter Clinic as well as a Primary Care Clinic. Both clinics provide services for client owned animals, rescues and TNR cats. TSC is equipped to provide urgent care that can be handled on an outpatient basis but does not have the capacity to treat & care for emergencies such as pets hit by a vehicle or those needing overnight care. We currently have 1 full time veterinarian for the HQHV Spay/Neuter Clinic with a 4:1 tech to doctor ratio and 1 full time veterinarian whose role is to oversee the Primary Care Clinic as well as provide medical and surgical care. In the Primary Care Clinic we have a 2:1 tech to doctor ratio with a goal of increasing the ratio to 3:1. Currently there is no weekend duty; we feel strongly in maintaining a good work-life balance.
We are seeking a veterinarian for our Primary Care Clinic with the key responsibilities of:
Diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions such as, but not limited to, wellness visits, treatment of vomiting, diarrhea, skin disorders, ear infections, eye infections, wound care, euthanasia for terminally ill animals, and monitoring & treatment of diabetes & thyroid disorders. These treatments must be performed at a high standard of care with an understanding that our client base has limited financial resources.
Collaborate with our Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Maintain accurate and thorough medical records.
Demonstrate strong communication skills with clients and fellow team members.
Provide services and treatments with a compassionate and caring attitude towards animals and their owners/caretakers.
The following skills are not mandatory but would be valued:
Evaluate and perform general surgical procedures such as spay/neuter, amputation, mass removal, various surgical ophthalmic conditions and other procedures that do not require extensive in-patient hospitalization.
Evaluate and perform high quality dentalsincluding digital dental radiography, scaling and polishing and extractions.
The Spayed Club (TSC), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose mission is to end euthanasia of healthy pets in the Greater Philadelphia area. In 30 years of operation, TSC has seen the euthanasia rate of healthy animals in the Greater Philadelphia area drop from more than 12,000 animals per year to less than 2,000 per year. There is still more work to be done. The single most important factor in preventing pet euthanasia is access to low cost veterinary health care and spay/neuter. TSC is making a difference in the welfare of animals within the community.
TSC is unique in that it is a not for profit veterinary clinic. It is not an animal shelter or rescue organization nor is it a clinic that provides just “essential” care. It operates through grants that allow TSC to subsidize fees. No animal is turned away and no animal is euthanized because of capacity limitations or the inability for pet owners to afford care.
With the high cost of veterinary care, clinics like TSC are needed now more than ever before. TSC services areas of high, unmet need including low-income neighborhoods in southeastern Delaware County bordering Philadelphia and South Philadelphia.
TSC provides serv...ices to 3 types of clients:
1) pet owners, many in lower income communities.
2) animal rescue organizations.
3) community cat trappers as part of the trap/neuter and return program (TNR).
These programs are subsidized by TSC in order to maintain the low cost for these services.
Pet owners: Many of TSC client owned pets have never been to a veterinarian. As veterinary care is getting more and more expensive, TSC clients, when faced with a sick pet, often must choose to surrender, abandon or euthanize these pets. TSC clients are often the elderly and/or people who consider pets as their family members, providing support and love. TSC provides more than just essential veterinary care such as vaccines and deworming. TSC is a clinic that not only provides essential care but care to pets that are sick or with various illnesses. This is what makes TSC unique as a veterinary clinic. TSC can make veterinary care affordable and therefore, keep pets healthy and in their homes.
Trap/neuter and return program (TNR): There is an overwhelming number of free roaming, community (stray) cats in both rural and urban areas. In the past, these cats were trapped and euthanized. TSC is partnering with community cat trappers to provide spay/neuter, vaccine services and veterinary medical treatments when necessary. TSC’s TNR program also provides training and support for those managing the colony. The ultimate goal of this program is to reduce the roaming cat population and to prevent the spread of rabies.
TSC partners with several animal welfare/rescue organizations: TSC provides spay/neuter, vaccination and veterinary medical care to animal welfare/rescue organizations at a reduced fee. Rescues including PALS, Catnip, Project Meow, Lucky Dawg, Peace Love and Doggie Paws, Animal Friends of Lansdowne, Rags 2 Riches, and Philly Bully are just a few that TSC partners with. TSC has become the lifeblood for these rescues as it would be unaffordable for these organizations to use “for profit” veterinary clinics for basic veterinary medical care.
History
TSC was founded in 1990 by a small group of volunteers. In 1995, TSC incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. During the era of 1990 through 2009, volunteers raised funds and contracted with local veterinarians to offer spay/neuter services at discounted prices or free to low income clients and to those involved in trap neuter return programs. By 2008, TSC had raised enough capital to open its own outpatient veterinary clinic. Sharon Hill, Delaware County was strategically selected as an area in need of these services. The initial focus of the clinic was spay/neuter. In 2015, TSC expanded the clinic to include veterinary medical care and surgeries other than spay/neuter, all at a reduced cost. TSC also served as a referral center to other “for profit” veterinarian clinic. When clients are unable to afford high cost surgical procedures at “for profit” veterinary clinics, these clinics referred these cases to TSC. TSC’s cost are substantially lower and affordable to these clients. The clinic sees over 7,000 cat and dogs each year.
In November 2023, TSC moved into a new veterinary facility which they own. The original facility had been leased. The new facility is located at 930 MacDade Boulevard, Collingdale, just around the corner from the original clinic in Sharon Hill. This clinic contains 4 modern surgical tables, 2 dental tables, 3 exam rooms, surgical and medical treatment areas as well as additional space for housing both feral and client owned animals prior to conducting medical and surgical procedures. There is also more office space for staff.
TSC's Future
TSC’s long term goal is to become a full serviced veterinary clinic providing in-patient hospitalization services as well as emergency veterinary care at affordable prices. TSC would like to expand its TNR program. By expanding the program to surrounding city and suburban areas, fewer cats will be born on the streets and fewer will be euthanized. TSC wants to provide community outreach and educational programs to financially disadvantaged pet owners. Programs on dog obedience training, general training workshops, a pet food pantry and a one stop library of materials related to pet ownership would be available at no cost. One of the key needs, is a kitten nursery. TSC would like to provide such a service as well as partner with, and support an existing kitten nursery by providing a source of additional funding, staff and volunteers.
