Tallgrass Veterinary Hospital is located less than 1.5 hours from Manhattan, KS and 45 minutes north of I70. This clinic was built in 2008 and is well-equipped for both small and large animal veterinary medicine. The goal of this externship/internship is to host veterinary students (2 weeks+) to help further their education so they are better equipped following graduation. Textbook learning is important but applying the classroom knowledge to real life is vital for success. 

Students will work assisted by the seasoned doctors to experience all types of veterinary medicine. This opportunity is meant to help students boost their knowledge and confidence so they can be successful practitioners. Areas of hands-on focus will be (but not limited to) patient/client wellness, internal medicine, dentistry, herd health, preventative medicine, replacement heifer and bull development, large animal handling, equine medicine, dystocias, and orthopedic surgeries (for both small and large animal). 

The clinic has a low cost housing option for the students during their internship. Students are encouraged to attend after-hours emergencies in order to help build their confidence and gain exposure to real-life situations. Our housing option is four miles from the clinic but there is a Holiday Inn and a Super 8 motel in town if students feel more comfortable with those living situations.

We ask that students are in veterinary school but we are not limiting the externship/internship to strictly 3rd and 4th year students. We expect students to be courteous of our staff and equipment as well as our clientele. We do not expect the students to be proficient in any skill but willing to learn. The goal of this experience is to help further the knowledge of the extern and the doctors in a collaborative environment.
